6th Graders Rock the Socks Off DES
6th Grade goes to Dade Elementary School to show students what band is like

By Autumn Blevins, 8th & Erin Bankson, 8th

The sixth grade band went to Dade Elementary School on May 1st to perform during their Fine Arts week. They played 4-6 songs from various composers, and they even demonstrated how the individual instruments look and sound. Three 5th grade girls were interviewed after the band’s performance. The girls said that they were very impressed by the band’s performance. They were also asked if they want to be in band next year, and one of the girls replied, “Maybe… I’ll think about it.” When asked what instrument she would play if she were in the band, she stated, “either the clarinet because my cousin plays it, or the trombone because my mom used to play it.” They all gave a thumbs up and job well done at being asked how well they thought the band did on their performance. Congratulations 6th grade band members on your excellent performance!!

Ag Day
Getting cultured

By Alyssa Jackson, 7th

Last Wednesday, May 2, the annual Ag Day was held at the Dade County extension Office. It was hosted by the county 4-H, and many high school and middle school students helped with this event.

Pre-school children and second graders from Dade and Davis attended the activity. They had the opportunity to pet farm animals and receive goody bags, while learning about agriculture. When finished, they had a refreshing ice cream sandwich, compliments of Mayfield Dairy Products.

This was an exciting time for all.

Essentially Art
That is the question

By Kelsey Shrum, 8th

Our DMS Art teacher Mr. B never ceases to amaze us. He has painted a new wall mural in the art room. The title of this mural is, “What is the essential question?”. You can plainly see exploding volcanoes and the world’s most favorite mouse, Mickey, spark your imagination to know what this weeks EQ is. Art’s not just art anymore.

New Athletic Building
Who needs it? We do!

By Chandler Gaddis, 6th

Should Dade Middle School have an athletic building? Yes! Dade County loves sports and this would only help improve our athletes. Not only would this improve the athletic teams, but also it would help cut back on gas cost. For instance, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays we have to take a bus from the middle school to the high school. Imagine how much money we would save in one week on gas and wear and tear on the bus! If you ask me, that is enough right there for the middle school to have their own athletic building!

Wolverzine Exclusive
Interview with a champion

By Alex Vaughn, 7th

As most of us know, Dade County Schools let out early on April 18, 2007, due to the Tour de Georgia. On that day, my dad and I drove to Downtown, Chattanooga to watch the finish of Stage 3. When we got there, we asked a reporter from News Channel 12 if she knew if I could get an interview with one of the bikers for the Wolverzine. She told us to ask some of the coordinators that were there. When we asked them for an interview, they said the bikers would finish around 4:15 and to meet one of them at the finish line at around 4:00. After that, we walked around and looked at all the booths that were set up there.

It was probably around 3:50 when one of the coordinators, Mike, came and took me back to the media tent to watch the rest of the stage on their TV. Once there, I was introduced to a lady named Robin. She asked for my name and what paper I write for, and then she printed some official credentials. After the race was over, I was invited to go to a press conference where some of the bikers were. Before it began, a man a didn't recognize asked me if I was looking for an interview. I told him yes, and then he said that he had the best biker right there with him. It turns out that biker was Javez Brajkovic, 23, of Slovenia. He bikes for Discovery Channel and is number three. This is his third year with Discovery and his sixth year overall. When asked why he decided to become a biker, he replied, "I love it." When I asked for his thoughts on the Tour de Georgia, he said, "I love the states. The terrain is great, the roads are great, and this is one of my favorites." He had no time to prepare for this event, however. Brajkovic was sick for nine days with a fever prior to the Tour de Georgia. Brajkovic competes for about 70 race days a year, most of which are stage races in Europe. Brajkovic went on to win first place in the overall standings of the Tour de Georgia.

After the interview was over, I recorded the press conference and was given free food because I was part of the media. Then I rode back home after a fun and exciting day.

Gossip/Advice

Whether you need sound dating advice or you just want to catch up on the latest buzz, we've got it here. Check out this week's Dear Penelope column from the guru of teenage advice herself. She's like Yoda with a purse and an attitude!

Dear Penelope,

Q: What should I do if my best friend is spreading rumors about me?

A: Man that is a hard one. First you should confront them about it. Tell them how you feel about it and try to work it out!

Q: My mom always yells at me about my bad grades. What should I do?

A: Well, you should try to bring your grades up. Seriously, get organized and work hard; it is actually fairly easy! If you don’t understand something in class, you can always go to the teacher and talk about it before or after school. I have found that this really helps!

A-School
What is it?

By Elizabeth Reid, 6th

What is Alternative School? Some of you may have been wondering, "What is "A" school?". Read this recent interview with Mrs. Lisa Reid who works in the alternative program and you will find out. She was asked the following questions:

What is A school?
It is an alternative for students who have been unsuccessful or unproductive in a traditional school setting.

How do you get put in A school?
Students are placed there for different reasons, some because of academics and others for discipline reasons.

How is A school different than regular school?
It is a more structured environment and the work is more individualized for each student.

What happens if kids don't behave in A school?
They can be sent to tribunal court and be permanently suspended for the year.

Can kids go back to regular school after they have been placed in A school?
Yes, but they have to prove that they can handle a regular school setting.

What grade levels do you teach?
We teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Do the kids get rewarded when they do something good?
Yes, but they have to earn every privilege they recieve including free time.

Do they get to take connections classes?
They have P.E. and access to some connections classes but these classes are considered privileges and are only availiable to those who earn them.

I hope this interview has answered some of your questions about the Alternative school program at DMS.
