    Course Description:

The Physical Science curriculum is designed to continue student investigations of the physical sciences that began in grades K-8 and provide students the necessary skills to have a richer knowledge base in physical science.  This course is designed as a survey course of chemistry and physics.  This curriculum includes more abstract concepts such as the conceptualization of the structure of atoms, motion and forces, and the conservation of energy and matter, the action/reaction principle, and wave behavior.  Students investigate physical science concepts through experience in laboratories and fieldwork using the processes of inquiry.

    Content Outline:

    Part 1

    Part 2

    Unit 1:  Matter

Unit 1:  Motion and Newton’s Laws

    Unit 2:  Atomic theory/configuration

    Unit 2:  Energy and Waves

    Unit 3:  Period Table

    Unit 3:  Electricity and Magnetism

Unit 4:  Chemical Bonding and Reactions

    Unit 4:  Nuclear Energy

    Unit 5:  Mathematics of Chemistry

Unit 5:  Thermodynamics and Energy Flow

    Instructional Format:

Lectures/note-taking, labs, class discussions, and individual/group work. Appropriate technology will be utilized as often as possible. We will use Google Classroom, Google Forms for Quizzes and Testing, Apex Learning, NearPod, and Infinite Campus mainly.

    Grades

The Final Course Grade will be based on:

    Daily/Homework 32%  (40% of cumulative grade)

Summative Assessments* 48% (60% of cumulative grade)

    Final Exam 20%

*Summative Assessments include Tests, major projects, and major labs.

    Makeup and Late Work Policy:

It is the student's responsibility to get makeup work from absences. All work will be in google classroom, infinite campus, and the classroom website. Students have 5 school days to turn in an excuse for absence (to the office). After these 5 school days, the absence will be considered unexcused. Late assignments will receive 10% fewer points for every day after the 5 excused school days. So, there are 5 days with no penalty if the absences are excused, the 10 days to get some points on makeup work. If the absence is unexcused, students have 10 days to get some points for makeup work. All assignments are due on the date specified, any work not turned in on that date will be considered late.

    Re-Test Policy

Students may retest summative assessments according to the following guidelines below:

    • May retest no more than 3 times over the course of the entire year in each subject area
    • The highest grade that can be obtained on a retest in an 80
    • Students must complete any teacher assigned remediation assignments before a retest (mostly likely the APEX content).

Students have 10 school days to complete remediation assignments and retest from the date the original test score was issued.

    Classroom Rules

      1. Be Prepared.  Have a notebook, a charged Chromebook, paper, pencil, etc. every day.

Dr. Turner utilizes Remind for sending out course announcements.  Parents and students are encouraged to sign up (this is not a requirement – announcements will be made in class, posted in the classroom, and handouts will be provided as needed). Right now, Remind is linked to both physical science and forensic science google classroom. I am trying to separate the two however if you get an assignment reminder that is not in your google classroom, please just ignore it.
    2. Please be aware that all classwork may be found in google classroom, the school teacher website, and infinite campus.
