Sandra W. Spivey, Ed.D.

Dr. Sandra Spivey is a native of Scottsboro, Alabama. After graduating from Scottsboro High School in 1986, she continued her education at Auburn University completing her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and English Secondary Education and her Masters in Mathematics Education. She completed her Masters Certification in Educational Administration and her Education Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership at Auburn University Montgomery, then went on to complete her Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Auburn University in 2004.

Dr. Spivey served as a High School Math Teacher for 8 years (in the Phenix City and Alexander City School Systems) during which time she also served for several years as a Cheerleading Coach and sponsor of various clubs and programs. She was a High School Assistant Principal at Benjamin Russell High School and within that same school system went on to serve as the Principal of Alexander City Middle School and Benjamin Russell High School before leaving Alexander City to serve as the Principal of Hoover High School and the Director of Human Resources for Hoover City Schools. She seized the opportunity to move back to North Alabama to be closer to her family in 2007 when she accepted the position as Director of Secondary Education for Madison County Schools. She remained there for 7 years before accepting a position with the Alabama State Department of Education as a Regional Support Coordinator.

While in Huntsville, she enjoyed serving as an Adjunct Professor for Samford University for 7 years and mentoring aspiring school leaders as they prepared to begin their journey as educational administrators, and she was very involved in volunteering with Leadership Huntsville/Madison County after completing the flagship program (Class 23) in 2010. She was selected as a member of Leadership Alabama - Class XXVII for 2016-2017 and very much enjoyed that wonderful learning experience.

After serving as the Superintendent of the Scottsboro City School System before retiring from public education in Alabama in 2017, she is back home in Scottsboro where she lives on a 160-acre farm with her husband, George, Yorkie Bridget, three Great Pyrenees (Buddy, Bella, and Bandit), and many goats. Immediately after retiring, she accepted a Principal’s position in the Dade County School System where she happily served for almost 3 years before agreeing to move to the Central Office as the Director of Business Operations. Although she worked very hard to learn and thrive in that role, accepting the primary responsibilities of Finance Director (during a global pandemic), she missed working with students and teachers and asked to return to a school setting, this time going all the way back to her roots as a High School Teacher. She is currently working with a wonderful team of educators and very much enjoying teaching Algebra and Geometry students at Dade County High School.

Sandra has always been involved in Church and community activities as well as professional organizations as she works to make learning and serving a part of life. While all of these activities have kept her busy, she and her husband make time to enjoy hiking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family, especially their four grandchildren (Ryland, Charlie Kate, Avery, and Kylee.)
